Tooling, Fixtures, and Mold Management: Often Forgotten by MES Yet Most Affecting Changeover

MES runs work orders and materials while tooling and molds stay on paper. Changeover stalls when molds cannot be found or their condition is unknown. Tooling must enter the system and bind to work orders.

Changeover plans say thirty minutes; the floor spends forty finding molds. Work orders and materials show green in MES, but who holds the fixtures, how many stamping cycles a mold has, and whether it is under repair—the system does not know. Tooling, fixtures, and molds are the third kit for changeover—often dropped from scope yet most affecting SMED. MES without tooling is only half an execution layer.

Molds and fixtures need identity, location, status, and maintenance counts—and kit checks before start, like materials.

Tooling Must Kit Too

Each mold/fixture set gets a unique code; scan in and out; bind to applicable products and machines. When a work order releases, check whether the required mold is idle and within maintenance thresholds. Molds under repair cannot enter frozen windows. Loss and book-to-physical mismatch are assessed like materials.

  • Changeover tasks carry mold/fixture lists—missing one item blocks start reporting.
  • When stamping count or usage hours hit limits, auto-route to maintenance—no "one more shift."
  • Shared molds need reservations—two work orders must not fight for one set.
Changeover downtime waiting because mold is not in tool crib
No mold, green work orders mean nothing. Forget the third kit and changeover time is fiction.

Write Molds and Fixtures into MES Scope

The XYN digital intelligence system validates tooling with work orders and equipment—changeover prep shifts from finding people to scanning codes. Mold management is not the face of smart manufacturing, but it is the substance of changeover minutes. Skip the substance and scheduling collapses at the machine.

Register and scan commonly used molds first. No records, no talk of auto changeover. Automation only changes molds you can find.

Scan tooling ID and bind to work order before start
Scannable means kit-complete. Kit-complete means changeover enters the improvable zone.
