Standard packaging cuts cost; key accounts specify wooden crates or printed cartons. If switching happens only verbally on the floor, peak season brings mispacks. Packaging rules must live on the order: standard by default, customer master data or order lines override with the specified plan. The warehouse prepares materials by order; planning calculates volume and procurement for specified packaging.
Both rule sets can coexist. What cannot coexist is "remembering at the packing station."
Switch at Order Entry
Customer profiles maintain specified packaging, shipping marks, and whether returnable containers apply. Orders carry the plan; changes go through versioning. Standard and specified packaging materials are stored separately to prevent diversion. Mispacks enter quality—not "minor packaging issues."
- No plan, no release to outbound.
- Lead times for specified packaging include packaging material lead time.
- Returns must identify whether a packaging rule switch caused the error.

The Order Is the Only Switch
The XYN digital intelligence system makes packaging plans an order attribute; the warehouse only executes. Standardization saves the default path; specified packaging serves the contract. With the switch at order level, both hold.
Check how many packaging plans this week's shipments came from verbal instructions. If any, migrate to order fields first—then talk packaging cost reduction.
