Arrival Appointments: Without Dock Slots, the Warehouse Is Busy Queuing—not Receiving

When suppliers arrive at once, trucks queue at the dock while the warehouse sits idle inside. Without appointment slots, the warehouse manages lines—not receiving and putaway.

At morning peak three trucks arrive together, forklifts are short, driver wait fees and unloading delays both rise. The warehouse looks busy—busy queuing. Arrival appointments slice the dock into time windows: suppliers come in their slot; late arrivals rebook or go last. Receiving without slots kills even the best plan at the door. Appointments constrain suppliers and promise the warehouse: someone receives inside the window.

Busy does not equal throughput. Throughput is lines received per hour—not trucks parked outside.

Slots Are a Contract

ASN carries the appointment; no appointment may mean reject or lower priority. Windows match unload capacity (pallets, QC needed). Urgent arrivals use a few expedite slots—avoid everyone calling urgent. Supplier scorecards include on-time arrival; warehouse scorecards include slot fulfillment—mutual constraint.

  • Schedule dock and QC stations together—avoid unload-then-wait-for-inspection.
  • Appointment system visible to suppliers; reschedules leave an audit trail.
  • At peak, add slot density first—not unplanned trucks.

Queuing is the symptom of no slots. Adding guards to the symptom does not raise throughput.

Receiving Capacity Must Be Visible

The XYN digital intelligence system links appointments, ASN, and dock occupancy to receiving tasks—the warehouse gets busy with putaway. Suppliers complain at first; after slots are honored, they pay less waiting too. A quiet door is how success looks; timely line putaway is what success is.

Count yesterday's trucks at the gate vs trucks unloading at once. If the former far exceeds the latter, add appointments before expanding the dock.
