When customers ask for traceability, plants think one-item-one-code. Labeling, scanning, printing, rework relabeling—high investment, and the floor skips scans. When it fails, traceability stays verbal: "probably that week's material." Complaints force wider recalls; losses exceed missed scans.
Batch management is the smaller viable path. Same material lot, same process window, same QC conclusion bound together—in/out at warehouse and line recorded by batch. Serial numbers can come later; batches cannot wait.
Why One-Item-One-Code Fails
Line takt does not allow stopping every piece to scan. Labels fall off, get oily, or change on rework—code and physical item diverge. Then system codes look more true than the floor; quality meetings fight over data. Without batch as backstop, one-item-one-code becomes a fancier mess.
If supplier material is batch-only and the plant forces serial numbers, someone must manually map relationships. Gaps break the chain at the first meter inside the gate.

Minimum Batch Scheme
- Incoming, WIP, and finished goods use batch as primary key—no batch, no receipt or line start.
- Batch binds supplier, arrival date, QC result; failed lots fully quarantined.
- Material issue and completion write back batch; mixed batches require split orders—no dumping into one tote for convenience.
- Customer complaints expand by batch; confirm high risk before serial numbers—not plant-wide labeling first.
